The Ultimate Naturally Sweet Snack: Hazelnut & Cacao Bliss Balls

Updated: Jun 25

Get a quick energy boost with these delicious vegan and gluten-free treats!

If you are in need for something indulgent but healthy, chocolatey but not overly sweet, and—most importantly—something you could whip up in minutes without turning on the oven, then get ready. Enter these Hazelnut & Cacao Bliss Balls. Inspired by the rich, nutty flavors of Nutella (but without the sugar crash), these little bites quickly became a household favorite. I actually accidentally created them while trying to make exactly that for my daughter, but stopped blending the nuts into nut butter when going in for a taste. Instead of a homemade Nutella, I decided to create a batch of little bliss balls instead for the week's lunch boxes.

Boy, what a good call that was. My friends devour them at each get together, my kids always request a second batch before the first one is gone, and I may or may not have hidden a few for myself in the back of the fridge. Trust me, once you try these, you’ll be hooked too!

These energy-packed treats are naturally sweet and rich in healthy fats, which makes them so perfect as a snack, for a quick energy boost or as a healthy dessert.

Hazelnut & Cacao Bliss Balls

Ingredients

Makes 24 balls

  • 1 cup raw hazelnuts (plus extra for rolling, if desired)

  • 1 cup sunflower seeds

  • 12 Medjool dates, pitted

  • 1/4 cup raw cacao powder

  • pinch of sea salt flakes

  • 1/2 cup of desiccated coconut for rolling

Directions

Roast the hazelnuts:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Spread the hazelnuts on a baking tray and roast for 8-10 minutes.

  3. Once cool, rub them with a clean towel to remove the skins (this enhances flavor but is optional).

Blend the hazelnuts

  • Place the hazelnuts in a food processor and pulse until they turn into a fine meal.

Add the remaining ingredients:

  1. Add dates, cacao powder, maple syrup, vanilla, salt, coconut oil, and flaxseeds.

  2. Blend until the mixture becomes sticky and holds together. If it's too dry, add 1-2 tbsp of water gradually.

Shape the Bliss Balls

  1. Scoop out 1 tablespoon of the mixture and roll it into a ball between your palms.

  2. Repeat until all the mixture is used (makes about 24 balls).

Coating

  • Roll each ball in desiccated coconut or finely chopped hazelnuts for an extra touch.

Chill the bliss balls in the fridge for at least 30 minutes to firm up. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week, or freeze for up to 3 months.
